Beach Walk: - 1 hour return easy walk to Lake edge to enjoy the view or have a swim. This walk is ideal for young families as the water gently slopes out so no big holes or sudden drops in depth of water, also suitable for anyone who wants to experience our native bush with limited time.
Circle track:- is 8km's round, with the view point 300 metres up. It takes approx 3 1/2 to 4 hrs to walk with stops. We recommend walking in a clockwise direction, which takes you up the steepest bit first. medium to good fitness
This way the climb is undertaken first to the view point for lunch / drink and then when you descend there is a wonderful sandy beach to also stop and enjoy the views onto a different aspect of the Lake and on a sunny day, a perfect place for a swim.
The Viewpoint from the top is stunning with wonderful views over the Lake with it's many Islands, and over to Mt Titaroa a limestone topped mountain & over the Back Valley, an area known as a local habitat of Red deer.
The local birdlife are entertaining with bird song and on occassions following you along. The native bush is distracting in it's beauty and smell.
This walk is of medium+ level of fitness as the climb to the top is quite steep, but the views are well worth it.
This is the only circular walk here in Fiordland, don't forget to take your swimming togs for a refreshing swim in the lake. A great way to finish the track. (See Map)
Access – Row boat hire or river water taxi avaialable to cross river to entrance of track. (see river transport) Allow 4 hours for walk to incorporate rest & photo stops.
Hope Arm & Back Valley: - This is a Valley walk through very pretty native Bush with forests of ferns, dripping Moss, Native orchids, fungi, moss gardens amid the delicate sonnets of bird song while fantails dance about waving there pretty black & white tail fan around. The tinkling of water provides anticipation of discovering crystal clear rivers with the interesting 3 wire bridge at back valley (1 wire for your feet & 1 wire for each hand!). This is 20km's and walked in 6 to 7 hrs.
Variations incl adding Circle track to the Walk or adding Lake Rakatu for a demanding 8 to 9 hr walking day,
Hope arm provides a great beach for swimming & fishing and the river at back valley is also known for fishing.
This walk is easy but if doing it all in 1 day you will need a good level of fitness as you will be walking 20 to 25 km's.
Access – Row boat hire or river water taxi avaialable to cross river to entrance of track. (see river transport) Allow 7 - 9 hours for walk to incorporate rest & photo stops.
