Welcome to Manapouri, Fiordland - New Zealand Manapouri is a small village of 300, and sits nestled against the Lake and the river, known more as the departure point for Doubtful Sound excursions and also the West Arm underground power station, this area also boasts the Manapouri Track in the Fiordland National Park. The Manapouri Track is considered "off the beaton track" and provides a variety of circular walk options from day walks to overnight walks as well as the challenging Mt Titaroa tramp. Access to this track is by boat only, there is no bridge to access this area. There are 2 options to access the track either Water Taxi or Row Boat. The Forest this track weaves through is a very pretty walk , an evergreen Beech forest, containing pristine rivers, lush mossy tracks, glades of ferns, surprising Fungi, colourful mushrooms and delicate white orchids highlighted by the stunning views over the lake with it's 33 islands with only the sound of bird song to be heard and the smell of the forest teasing the senses. Birds to be found on this track are fantails, bellbirds, Tuis, native parakeets and the NZ Robin along with tomtits, Native pigeons and the owl, the morpawk. Red Deer also inhabit our forest, and are occassionally startled on the track. Possums can be seen asleep up tree's and pig rootings can also be sighted. On the river there are a variety of ducks, from the common mallard & Paradise ducks to the protected Scaups (brown teal) and endangered Crested Grebe. Summer is a highlight with baby ducklings which we are happy to show you from the water taxi. In the river live brown and rainbow trout which can be fished for and eaten or released again. Also a protected breed of eel, called the "Long Finned Eel", live in the Lake, these eels are tagged and monitored to verify they are continuing to migrate to the Pacific islands to breed and then return.
We look forward to sharing this special part of Fiordland with you. Regards Mike & Donna Click here for all enquiries |
